Professional Actor Training Centre

TV/Film and acting techniques & Creating a show reel

This intensive group looks at the differences between film, TV and live performance techniques. It is open to people who wish to enter the area of film and TV but also to those who simply have a strong interest in the techniques involved.

Although the focus is on TV and filming, we will also teach theatre techniques as they apply to the film and TV medium. Many theatre/acting techniques are the most profound of all and can be adapted for the screen in many ways. Therefore, you will spend time in theatre warm up sessions for the first part of the class before going into filming.

By the end of this course, participants will have a range of scenes and monologues that they will be given. Each student will then have enough material to edit into a show reel if they wish to pursue agents, casting directors and so on. (based on $66.00 per session including GST and epuipment)

Course plan

Term 1: Monologues. Each student will be given a number of monologues that are suitable for TV. Acting techniques that assist you with monologue work will also be taught. Each person’s monologues will be filmed several times to enable improvement.

At the final session a prominent agent/casting director or actor will also view at least one monologue from each participant and give feedback.

Term 2: Scenes from film and TV.  Audition technique: This block will focus on scenes from film and TV in which you are likely to be cast. Again, we will teach acting techniques that help to prepare you best for auditions.

At the final session a prominent casting director will also view at least one scene from each participant and give feedback.

Term 3 : Casting “against type”. This block will give you the opportunity to look at a range of more difficult/intense film scenes and to offer a version of yourself that might not ordinarily occur to people. This is about “finding your opposite” and showing that you have a range of characters that can be played.

At the final session a prominent casting director/agent or actor will view at least one scene from each participant and give feedback.

Term 4: Creating a character of your own. In many ways this is the most creative work for an actor. You will be given a wide range of acting techniques that enable you to come out with a character entirely from your own imagination. This character will then be placed in scenes.

At the final session a prominent actor or casting director will view at least one scene from each participant and give feedback.
