For students who would like to be professional actors
Many people come to Drama with a Difference with the intention of becoming a professional actor. As a drama school that has been the launching pad of so many successful actors, we are a good place for you, if that is your intention.
We encourage your dreams and aspirations, while keeping a realistic and grounded approach.
Very often we get asked ‘How do I get an agent?’ at the very first class!
Please understand that we need to know you first, before we can start recommending agents.
We know a number of ethical agencies who specialise in different areas and different ages. Some of them do extra work, which is a great place to start. This kind of work gets you used to being on a set, and gives you a better understanding of how things work. Some of these agencies charge joining fees, which are used for photo, administration purposes. The fees are reasonable, given that they need to get you started. A lot of reputable agents do extra work, as well as larger roles, and everything in between. All agents take a commission from any work you obtain.
However, there are some agencies that charge a lot of money, and live primarily off their joining fees. It is prudent to ask agents with large joining fees to offer you a list of what shows, ads etc. their clients have been in, and who they are!
There are a group of boutique agents that specialise in larger roles. Of course, they also do ads etc. but they select their actors based on a CV, like most other businesses. If the actor’s CV has a lot of professional experience on it, they are more likely to interview the actor! The other way these agents take on actors is by SEEING THEM ACT!
The best agents will usually want to see you in something.
The vast majority of students who have gained professional work through our school were seen in our productions. Therefore, doing the courses, and taking part in the production, is the best way to be seen.
We invite casting consultants, agents, producers and theatre directors to these shows. Naturally, they understand that they are watching a student production, and you will not be ‘judged’ from a professional point of view. However, if they see potential in you, or are looking for someone of your ‘type’, then you never know your luck! There have been many times when students have been seen in a production, invited to audition for a TV series, taking on guest roles at first, and then gaining large, ongoing parts in television series such as Neighbours, Blue Heelers, Home and Away and so on. Others have been immediately chosen to audition for films. We cannot make any promises, but if you are interested in entering the industry, please let us know.
Information regarding term classes can be found under the menu headings Primary, Teenage and Adult. These classes and the associated performances will give you not only a wider variety of skills, but the opportunity to be seen.
We also offer those who want to become professional the following:
