The Drama With A Difference Production Group is a new program starting in 2016. It is open to adults and older teenagers who wish to be involved in a full length, semi-professional play and season.

This course is now full. Details of our upcoming production will soon be posted.

This program is open to people who are considering acting as a profession, as well as to others who simply want an experience of being involved in a full length show over an extended season.

As distinct from most amateur theatre companies, semi-professional theatre involves a mix of amateur and professional theatre practitioners. Our shows will use professional directors, who will also teach the craft of acting throughout the process of rehearsals. Our creative (lighting designers/operators etc.) will also be from the profession.

A showcase for those who want to enter the profession

We aim to create a standard of theatre that will enable aspiring actors to be seen in a ‘showcase’. We have contacts with all the industry professionals in Melbourne and will assist you with ways in which to approach the most appropriate and relevant people and entities to see you in the show. We will also invite our own contacts.

Many of the students from this school who went on to become professional actors were first seen in showcases such as these. See Students of note.

The aim is to create a semi-professional theatre group that will present a full length show to be performed over a season of approximately sixteen shows. We will present shows that consist of predominantly adult and older teenage casts. The rehearsal hours will be organised to fit around the lives of working adults and students.

Due to the demands of the schedule and the season, we will have two actors playing each role in the play. This will give greater flexibility for everyone involved. Actors will do half the number of shows in the season each, however, should the need arise for this to be varied, this can be mutually arranged between cast members.

There are three blocks involved for our 2016 season. Although the rehearsals hours appear extremely long, bear in mind that you will not be called for every rehearsal, and rarely called for the entire day. The rehearsals will be broken down into scenes and you will only be called when your scene is being rehearsed.

Nevertheless, as the show gets closer to opening, the rehearsal hours will inevitably increase for everyone involved.

Once the season itself begins, you can work out (with your ‘double’), the best way to proceed in terms of performing. There will be two shows on a Saturday and a Sunday. Some actors may elect to perform one performance per day, while others may prefer to do two shows in one day, leaving the other day free. Others may elect to alternate weekends. This will be part of the scheduling that will be done closer to the time, and in a way that best takes in the needs of everyone involved.

As distinct from our other courses, this course will involve an audition, as there are limited roles and people need to suit the requirements of those roles.
